a truly
moral person
I have good rules, they're friends
to me,
they're right, they're safe, they're known, you see.
A shadow is my enemy.
From now, I'll always do things right.
With gritted teeth I'll win my fight,
determination screwed up tight.
(the shadow passes by)....
I must not see! I must not hear!
Block out that shadow! Stay in gear,
stay smothering subversive fear!
But, sabotage! That shadow won.
Wrenching all resolution down,
it blackens me. But, I'm not done!
I'll fight that shadow till it's gone.
At last, I'll rest . . . . at last, become
so perfect, guiltless, mindless, numb -
A shadow-free automaton.
